Grocery Store Tours

March 12, 2015 By Betsy Roesler

The Richland Hospital Nutrition Department is presenting three grocery store tours in April led by Viterbo dietetic intern Morgan Welte.

Dates are:

April 8: 1-2 pm at Ed’s Family Foods

April 14: 10-11 am at Walmart

April 22: 6-7 pm at Burnstad’s

The dietitian will lead the group through the grocery store identifying healthy options, do some practice with label reading and give participants the chance to ask specific questions. This is a great opportunity to refresh on healthy eating tips, ask questions and learn from a dietitian!

To sign up for a tour call the Richland Hospital Scheduling Department at 608-647-6321 ext. 2140 or just ask for Scheduling. There are limited spots for each tour so please call early to guarantee a spot.

Richland County Local Food Review

February 9, 2015 By Betsy Roesler

We completed our first calendar year of procuring local produce for the Richland County Farm to School program with many successes, challenges and new opportunities. We reflected on 2014 and are excited for what 2015 will bring!

The Richland County Local Food Review looks at the impact of the program on serving local produce in the Richland School District, the Richland County Senior Nutrition Program and at UW Richland . It also shows the impact on the local food economy and the amount of money going into the hands of local growers.

As the program continues to evolve we are looking for more growers to get involved so please share, tweet or ‘like’ this post so we can reach all potential growers in our area.

First Snowshoe Adventure Day Delayed

December 9, 2014 By Betsy Roesler

We were looking forward to our first Snowshoe Adventure Day of the season but with a lack of snowfall and anticipated warmer weather (thus no chance of snow in the next couple days) we are going to cancel the outing planned for this Sunday at 1:00 pm. Depending on snow and interest we will try to reschedule for another date in January or February.

The next scheduled date is January 11 at 1:00 pm meeting in the Symons Parking Lot. To reserve a pair of snowshoes call Dana Fischer at 608-649-5968 .

Thanks!!

Richland County Celebrates Farm to School with a Crunch!

October 23, 2014 By Betsy Roesler

On Friday October 24 during lunch Jefferson and Dounda Elementary Schools will be crunching into local Oakwood apples to celebrate Food Day and National Farm to School Month! Fall is harvest time in Wisconsin and a great time to think about all the produce that is grown in our communities and the hard work of farmers.

According to the USDA Farm to School Census and the Wisconsin Farm to School Food Service Survey 55% of schools in Wisconsin have a Farm to School program. The Richland School District is settling into the 2nd year of their Farm to School program which includes classroom education, taste-testing of Harvest of the Month items and new this year an emphasis on  including local Harvest of the Month items on the menu.

When the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch was announced as way to celebrate Farm to School in Wisconsin, Richland County Farm to School jumped on board. Last Thursday Alice in Dairyland came to Richland Center and crunched into Oakwood Cortland apples with students from Lincoln, and 4th and 5th graders at Jefferson and Dounda. Tomorrow all students at Jefferson and Dounda will get to participate in the Great Apple Crunch during the lunch hour.

To get involved with the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch post a picture of you crunching into a local apple to the Richland FIT Facebook page!

3 Cheers for Farm to School, Local Farmers and Delicious Apples!!!
